Focal Blur

The edit was made on FCP by the director Patrik Karlson. Patrik made a great edit and handed the project over to me to make the final post processing- colour correction, grading and effects

When we were in pre-production Patrik and I talked allot about how the video should look. The requirements set down were for a warm feeling verging on sepia. The video was to reference a 'look' from the 1930's/40's period films. This may sound vague, but it was very clear to us, as we had a developed a catalogue of reference of mood board pics and clips from the net.

I adjusted the levels and colour corrected in FCP. I had made some tests in Apple Color and was 50/50 about what I should grade in. Eventually I chose to grade completely in FCP Using the '3-Way Colour wheel' and Colorista. I love working with those tools, one can really paint in Colorista, but obviously as a grading tool it still pales to Apple Color.

A side note to the grading. The Canon XH-A1 is an HDV camera, HDV is not the kind of codec you want to grade on, so right from the start I logged all of the footage as ProRes HQ.

After the grading was finished I made a noise reduction and placed the 2.35 matte on top adjusting clips to fit.

Tingsek Music Video Break down

Shooting the Tingsek music video 'Six years' Feat. Pauline. The video was directed by Patrik Karlson. I shot the video on a Canon XH-A1 with Letus FE using a nice set of primes ( 19mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 60mm 85mm, 135m and 180mm) I really favored the Ziess 85mm it was crispy and if I am not mistaken had a pleasant warmish tint to it.

Because of the weight of the rig I found operating the Glidecam

cumbersome (I snuck in a few flybys ) so I opted for the MultiRig pro and went hand held. Going handheld also allowed for a greater pace. I felt dubious about making this decision, but it gave the shots a more organic feel over the Glidecams 'floaty' feeling. When I needed smoother shots and wasn't concerned with the low angle got the wheelchair out.

The video was shot in an old Swedish (Skåne) farmstead barn. It was DARK. For Lights we used 9 Readheads @ 800w each and two Arri fresnals at around 650w. For extra eyelight I used an onboard camera light thats pumps out 40w in a diffused spot. We couldn't plug all the lights into the mains of the barn, so we had a very noisy (and extremely heavy) gas generator outside supplying us with all the power we needed.

The oasis to struggling with the incredibly dark barn was a shot outside the barn where Tingsek, Pauline and a handful of the musicians have an acoustic 'jam'. It was a pleasant scene to shoot, and though required some tricky Audio rigging was very relaxed.
